Asian elephant Gestation Calculator

A asian elephant's gestation period is about 617 days, or roughly 20 months and 1 week, though it ranges from 600 to 640 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the asian elephant gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. The calculator uses the 617-day average for this species.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the calving area.

How long is a asian elephant's gestation period?

The average is 617 days from breeding to calving, about 20 months and 1 week. Anything between 600 and 640 days is normal, and a typical litter is 1 calf. Treat the calculated date as the middle of that window rather than a fixed appointment.

Working backwards from a target calving date

If you want calfs on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 617 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Asian elephant gestation calculator FAQs

How long is an Asian elephant pregnant?

About 630 days — roughly 21 months — with a normal range of around 615 to 660 days. That is about two weeks shorter than an African elephant's gestation.

How is the birth date predicted?

Through progesterone monitoring. Levels stay high throughout pregnancy and fall sharply two to five days before birth, which is the trigger for 24-hour observation. Nothing observable predicts the day as reliably.

How big is a newborn Asian elephant?

Around 90 to 110 kg, standing about a metre at the shoulder. It should be on its feet within an hour and nursing within two to three hours, and it stays dependent on its mother's milk for two years or more.

How often can an Asian elephant calve?

About every four to six years. A 21-month pregnancy followed by years of nursing means the reproductive rate is very low, which is why every calf matters so much to conservation breeding programmes.

Can elephants have twins?

Very rarely — well under one percent of births. When twins do occur it is usually a difficult birth and both calves rarely survive, because a cow's milk supply and the herd's pace are built around a single calf.
