Rabbit Gestation Calculator

A rabbit's gestation period is about 31 days, or roughly 1 month, though it ranges from 28 to 33 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the rabbit gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. The calculator uses the 31-day average for this species.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the kindling area.

How long is a rabbit's gestation period?

The average is 31 days from breeding to kindling, about 1 month. Anything between 28 and 33 days is normal, and a typical litter is 4-12 kits. Treat the calculated date as the middle of that window rather than a fixed appointment.

Working backwards from a target kindling date

If you want kits on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 31 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Rabbit gestation calculator FAQs

How long is a rabbit pregnant?

About 31 days. Kindling normally happens between day 28 and day 33, and litters born before day 28 rarely survive.

When should I add the nest box?

On about day 28, three days before the due date. Adding it earlier means the doe is more likely to soil it, and adding it late risks a litter born on the wire or bare floor.

How can I tell if my doe is actually pregnant?

Gentle palpation from about day 14 is the standard method, feeling for marble-sized embryos along the lower abdomen. Weight gain and refusal of the buck also point to pregnancy.

What is a false pregnancy in rabbits?

After an infertile mating a doe can show nesting and fur pulling for about 17 days without being pregnant. It resolves on its own and needs no treatment.

Can a rabbit get pregnant again immediately?

Yes. A doe can conceive within hours of kindling, so separate the buck before the litter arrives if you do not want back-to-back litters.

How many kits are in a normal litter?

Usually 4 to 12, with smaller breeds at the lower end and large commercial breeds at the upper end. First litters are often smaller than later ones.
