A zebra finch does not have a gestation period. Birds do not carry developing young inside the body: the female lays an egg and the embryo develops inside that egg, outside her, warmed either by a sitting parent or by an incubator. The correct term is incubation, and it is measured from the day the eggs are set or the parent begins sitting, not from mating and not from the day the first egg appears.

How do zebra finches incubate their eggs?
The hen lays one egg a day, and the pair usually starts sitting properly once a few eggs are in the nest. Both the cock and the hen take turns to incubate, and at night both often sit in the nest together. Because sitting starts partway through laying, the chicks usually hatch over several days rather than all at once, so the youngest chick is noticeably smaller.
Can you incubate zebra finch eggs artificially?
It is rarely done. The eggs can be incubated, but newly hatched zebra finches need feeding every hour or so from the first day, which is extremely demanding. Breeders who need a backup use foster parents instead; Bengalese (society) finches are well known for raising zebra finch chicks.

After about five to seven days of sitting, a small torch held against the egg will show veins in a fertile egg. Candle quickly and only when both birds are off the nest, since some pairs abandon a nest that is handled too often.
