Goat Gestation Calculator

A goat's gestation period is about 150 days, or roughly 4 months and 4 weeks, though it ranges from 145 to 155 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the goat gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. Pick the breed so the calculator uses the right average gestation length.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the kidding area.

How long is a goat's gestation period?

The average is 150 days from breeding to kidding, about 4 months and 4 weeks. Anything between 145 and 155 days is normal, and a typical litter is 1-3 kids. Treat the calculated date as the middle of that window rather than a fixed appointment.

How breed changes the kidding date

Selecting a breed swaps the average the calculator uses, which can move the kidding date by more than a week.

Working backwards from a target kidding date

If you want kids on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 150 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Goat gestation calculator FAQs

How long is a goat pregnant?

About 150 days, roughly five months, with almost all does kidding between 148 and 152 days. Goat gestation is noticeably more predictable than sheep or cattle gestation.

Do Nigerian Dwarf and Pygmy goats kid earlier?

Yes. Miniature breeds average 145 to 147 days rather than 150, so calculate their due dates separately. A Nigerian Dwarf doe reaching day 150 is already a few days past her breed average.

How can I tell my goat is actually pregnant?

The only reliable early answers are an ultrasound from about day 35 or a blood pregnancy test. Goats commonly have false pregnancies with a large belly and even udder development, so visual assessment alone misleads breeders every season.

When should I dry off a milking doe before kidding?

Around day 100, giving a 50-day dry period. That rest lets the udder tissue regenerate, protects the next lactation and produces stronger colostrum for the kids.

What tells me kidding is hours away?

The ligaments either side of the tail head go soft and then cannot be felt at all, the udder is tight and shiny, and a long string of mucus appears. She will paw bedding, get up and down and often call quietly to her side. Kids normally arrive within 12 to 24 hours of the ligaments going.
