Donkey Gestation Calculator

A donkey's gestation period is about 365 days, or roughly 11 months and 4 weeks, though it ranges from 340 to 390 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the donkey gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. The calculator uses the 365-day average for this species.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the foaling area.

How long is a donkey's gestation period?

The average is 365 days from breeding to foaling, about 11 months and 4 weeks. Anything between 340 and 390 days is normal, and a typical litter is 1 foal. Treat the calculated date as the middle of that window rather than a fixed appointment.

Working backwards from a target foaling date

If you want foals on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 365 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Donkey gestation calculator FAQs

How long is a donkey pregnant?

About 365 days — a full year — with a normal range of roughly 340 to 390 days. Donkeys carry around three to four weeks longer than horses, and there is far more variation between individuals.

My donkey is past a year. Is she overdue?

Not necessarily. Gestations of 375 to 390 days happen regularly and can produce a completely healthy foal. Have your vet check her rather than assuming she needs inducing; induction in donkeys carries real risk.

How is a donkey pregnancy confirmed?

Ultrasound from about day 16, repeated near day 60 to check the pregnancy is progressing and to rule out twins. Blood tests are also available. Waiting for a visible belly wastes months and misses twins entirely.

What is hyperlipaemia and why does it matter now?

It is a serious metabolic disease where fat floods the bloodstream after a donkey stops eating properly, and pregnant and lactating jennies are the highest risk group. Never let a pregnant donkey go off feed: a jenny not eating for more than a day is a same-day vet call.

Can a donkey get pregnant again straight after foaling?

Yes — often within 10 days of foaling. Separate the jack immediately after foaling unless you actively want another foal, because back-to-back pregnancies are hard on the jenny.
