Signs a donkey is pregnant

• No return to season at the expected three-week interval and rejection of the jack
• Ultrasound from about day 16 is the only accurate early confirmation
• The belly drops and broadens noticeably during the last three months
• Udder development in the final weeks, sometimes with waxy beads on the teats

• She becomes markedly more private, seeking out corners and moving away from company
• Restlessness, sweating and tail swishing in the hours before foaling — often at night
• Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before foaling begins.

• Donkeys carry longer than horses — about 365 days rather than 340 — and a range of 340 to 390 days is entirely normal, so a donkey 'overdue' by horse standards may be perfectly on time.
• That long, variable gestation is the single biggest reason donkey owners think something is wrong: there is no reliable way to narrow the date to a week, let alone a day.
• Donkeys are prone to hyperlipaemia, a life-threatening fat metabolism disorder triggered by stress or going off feed in late pregnancy, and it is the most common reason a pregnant jenny needs emergency treatment.
• Jennies are extremely private about foaling and will often hold off until they are alone at night; most foalings are unobserved even on well-run yards.
• A jenny can come back into season within 10 days of foaling, so a jack must be kept separate unless a foal every year is genuinely wanted.
