Signs a goat is pregnant

• No return to heat 21 days after mating and no more tail-flagging at the buck
• Ultrasound confirmation from about day 35, which also rules out false pregnancy
• Right side of the abdomen fills out visibly from around day 100
• Udder development from about a month before kidding, tightening in the last days

Signs of approaching kidding

• Tail-head ligaments soften and disappear 12 to 24 hours before kidding
• She paws bedding, talks to her flank, refuses grain and looks back at her side repeatedly
• Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before kidding begins.

What affects goat gestation length

• Goats hold a much tighter gestation than sheep, and 150 days is a genuinely reliable figure: most does kid between 148 and 152.
• Miniature breeds are the exception — Nigerian Dwarf and Pygmy does often kid at 145 to 147 days, so a herd with mixed sizes needs two different due dates.
• Twins are the norm rather than the exception in dairy breeds, and does carrying triplets or quads typically kid one to two days early.
• The tail-head ligaments either side of the spine soften and become impossible to feel 12 to 24 hours before kidding, which is the most reliable practical predictor breeders have.
• Does can have false pregnancies (pseudopregnancy) with a swollen abdomen and no kids, ending in a flood of clear fluid — this is why ultrasound is worth doing.
