Giraffe Gestation Calculator

A giraffe's gestation period is about 430 days, or roughly 14 months, though it ranges from 400 to 460 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the giraffe gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. The calculator uses the 430-day average for this species.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the calving area.

How long is a giraffe's gestation period?

Working backwards from a target calving date

If you want calfs on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 430 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Giraffe gestation calculator FAQs

How long is a giraffe pregnant?

About 453 days, or roughly 15 months, with a normal range of around 430 to 465 days. Giraffes carry a single calf and twins are extremely rare.

Do giraffes really give birth standing up?

Yes. The cow stays standing and the calf falls about two metres to the ground. The impact ruptures the amniotic sac and helps trigger the calf's first breath, and healthy calves are unhurt by it.

How quickly can a newborn giraffe stand and run?

It is usually on its feet within 30 minutes and nursing within an hour, and it can run within a day. In a landscape full of lions and hyenas, a calf that cannot move quickly does not last long.

How big is a newborn giraffe?

About 1.8 metres tall and 50 to 70 kg — taller at birth than most adult humans. It grows extremely fast on the cow's rich milk, gaining as much as a couple of centimetres a day in the first months.

Do giraffes have a breeding season?

No fixed one — they can conceive at any time of year. In parts of their range births still cluster in the dry season, which is thought to reflect body condition and calf survival rather than a true seasonal cycle.
