Months 1–3: early gestation
After mating in the water there is no visible change. In zoos, pregnancy is usually confirmed from hormone levels in faeces or by ultrasound, because a hippo's bulk hides an early pregnancy completely.

A hippopotamus is pregnant for about 240 days, roughly 7 months and 3 weeks. Normal calving happens between 225 and 250 days, and a typical litter is 1 calf.
A hippopotamus carries her calf for an average of 240 days, or about 7 months and 3 weeks. Counting from the breeding date, calving is normal anywhere from day 225 to day 250.

The calf grows steadily and the cow continues her normal pattern of resting in water by day and grazing on land at night. In managed care, keepers watch body condition and begin planning where the calf will be born.
The cow becomes more protective of her space and may move away from the group. The calf is born in shallow water or thick cover and must swim to the surface for its first breath. Mother and calf stay apart for a short time, then return to the pod.
Every fifth breeding date across the year with the matching calving date, calculated at 240 days. Find the row closest to the date the hippopotamus was served; because normal gestation spans 225 to 250 days, plan for a window of a few days either side.
