Courtship can involve the bull following the cow for days. After mating there is no visible change. In zoos, faecal hormone tests are the usual way to confirm pregnancy.
The calf grows slowly and steadily. The cow keeps grazing as normal. In managed care, this is the time to train her for ultrasound checks and plan where she will give birth.
The abdomen widens and the udder develops. The cow often separates from others to give birth, sometimes in thick cover. The calf stands within hours and nurses soon after, and the cow is fiercely protective.
Every fifth breeding date across the year with the matching calving date, calculated at 490 days. Find the row closest to the date the white rhinoceros was served; because normal gestation spans 480 to 500 days, plan for a window of a few days either side.
