White-tailed Deer Gestation Period: How Long Is a Deer Pregnant?

Last updated

A white-tailed deer, also known as whitetail deer, is pregnant for about 200 days, roughly 6 months and 2 weeks. Normal fawning happens between 187 and 222 days, and a typical litter is 1-2 fawns.

How long is a white-tailed deer pregnant?

A white-tailed deer carries her fawn for an average of 200 days, or about 6 months and 2 weeks. Counting from the breeding date, fawning is normal anywhere from day 187 to day 222.

White-tailed deer gestation stages, month by month

Days 1–60: early gestation

Conception happens during the rut, usually at the doe's first heat. The embryo implants within the first few weeks and there is no outward sign. In winter, wild does lean on fat reserves while the embryo is still small, which is why heavy early winter stress rarely ends a pregnancy outright. On deer farms this is the window for blood or ultrasound pregnancy checks.

Days 61–130: mid gestation

The fetus grows steadily through late winter. Wild does are often on their thinnest browse of the year, so condition going into the rut largely decides how well this stage goes. Farmed does should be kept on steady rations, with handling and moving kept to a minimum.

Days 131–185: late gestation

Most fetal weight is added in the final two months, as spring green-up arrives in the wild. A doe carrying twins visibly widens through the flanks. Protein and energy needs climb sharply. Farmers raise feed quality now, because underfed does produce small fawns with poorer survival.

Days 186–200+: fawning

The doe becomes solitary and defends a small fawning area. Fawns are born, licked clean and nursed within hours, then left hidden in cover while the doe feeds nearby. Twins are often bedded apart. A fawn found alone in the grass is normally waiting for its mother and should be left where it is.

Signs a white-tailed deer is pregnant

  • No visible change for the first few months, so wild pregnancies are rarely obvious until spring
  • A blood test for pregnancy-specific protein B (PSPB) confirms pregnancy on farmed deer from about day 30 to 40
  • Ultrasound by a vet confirms pregnancy and can often show twins
  • The belly and flanks widen noticeably from early spring, especially with twins

Signs of approaching fawning

  • Udder swelling and teats filling in the last week or two before fawning
  • The doe separates from other deer, chases off last year's fawns and stays in one small area of dense cover
  • Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before fawning begins.

What affects white-tailed deer gestation length

  • Gestation averages about 200 days, close to six and a half months, so a doe bred in mid November usually fawns in late May or early June.
  • Rut timing is set mainly by day length. Across most of the northern and midwestern United States and southern Canada, breeding peaks in November, which places the bulk of fawning in late May and June.
  • Latitude matters: the further north, the tighter and more predictable the rut, because fawns born late have too little summer to grow before winter. In the far south the rut is spread out and can fall anywhere from autumn to late winter depending on the local herd's history.
  • Twins are the most common outcome for healthy adult does in good habitat. Yearling does and does in poor condition more often carry a single fawn, and triplets occur but are uncommon.
  • Fawn sex ratios sit close to 50:50 in most herds, and twins can be the same or opposite sex because each fawn comes from a separate egg.
  • Doe fawns can breed in their first autumn when food is abundant; they tend to breed later in the rut than adult does, so their fawns arrive later the following summer.
  • A doe that is not bred on her first heat cycles again about 28 days later. Late-bred does are the main reason some fawns are still being born in July or August.
  • Nutrition affects how many fawns survive more than it changes the gestation length. Does on a poor diet in late winter tend to have lighter fawns and weaker twins.

White-tailed deer pregnancy FAQs

How long is a white-tailed deer pregnant?

About 200 days, roughly six and a half months. Normal gestation runs from around 187 to 222 days, so most does fawn within a week or two either side of the 200-day mark.

When are whitetail fawns born?

In most of the northern and midwestern United States, mainly from late May through June, about 200 days after the November rut peak. In southern states with a later rut, fawning can run into July, August or later.

How common are twins in white-tailed deer?

Twins are the norm for healthy adult does in good habitat. First-time mothers and does in poor condition more often have a single fawn, and triplets are possible but uncommon.

When is the whitetail rut?

Across most of the northern range breeding peaks in November. Day length triggers it, so the rut is tight and predictable in the north and more spread out and variable in the south, where it can fall well into winter.

If a doe is bred in December, when will she fawn?

Around 200 days later, so a doe bred in mid December would usually fawn in early July. Enter the breeding date in the calculator above for the exact estimated date.
