Cow Gestation Period: How Long Is a Cow Pregnant?

A cow, also known as cattle, is pregnant for about 283 days, roughly 9 months and 1 week. Normal calving happens between 279 and 292 days, and a typical litter is 1 calf.

How long is a cow pregnant?

A cow carries her calf for an average of 283 days, or about 9 months and 1 week. Counting from the breeding date, calving is normal anywhere from day 279 to day 292.

Cow gestation stages, month by month

Days 1–60: early embryonic period

The embryo attaches to the uterine wall between days 17 and 42. Most pregnancy losses happen in this window, so avoid heat stress, abrupt ration changes and unnecessary handling. Ultrasound can confirm pregnancy from about day 28 to 30.

Days 61–180: mid gestation

Foetal growth is slow and the cow's nutritional demand is close to maintenance. This is the cheapest period to feed and the best time for hoof trimming, vaccination and any routine handling.

Days 181–250: late gestation growth

Roughly 70 to 75 percent of foetal growth happens in the last third of pregnancy. Energy and protein requirements climb steadily, and body condition should be built now rather than after calving.

Days 251–283: pre-calving

Dairy cows are dried off around 60 days before the due date. Pre-calving vaccinations raise colostrum quality. In the final two weeks the udder fills, the pelvic ligaments slacken and the cow should be moved to a clean, well-bedded calving area.

Signs a cow is pregnant

  • No return to oestrus roughly 21 days after service
  • Positive rectal palpation from about day 35 or ultrasound from day 28
  • Blood or milk pregnancy-associated glycoprotein test positive from about day 28
  • Gradual abdominal enlargement on the right side from mid gestation

Signs of approaching calving

  • Udder development in the last four to six weeks, earlier in heifers
  • Relaxed pelvic ligaments, a slack tailhead and a swollen vulva in the final days
  • Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before calving begins.

What affects cow gestation length

  • Gestation length is moderately heritable and is influenced more by the sire's breed than by the dam's, because the calf's own genetics affect when labour begins.
  • Bull calves are carried on average one to two days longer than heifer calves.
  • Twins shorten gestation by roughly five to ten days and raise the risk of retained placenta and freemartin heifers.
  • Cows carrying a calf through a hot summer often calve slightly earlier, while cold conditions late in gestation tend to lengthen gestation by a few days.
