Ferret Gestation Calculator

A ferret's gestation period is about 42 days, or roughly 1 month and 1 week, though it ranges from 38 to 44 days depending on breed and individual animal.

How to use the ferret gestation calculator

  1. 1. Choose what you know. Enter the breeding date to get a due date, or switch to the target due date mode to work backwards to the breeding date you need.
  2. 2. Refine the inputs. The calculator uses the 42-day average for this species.
  3. 3. Plan around the range. Use the earliest and latest dates and the milestone timeline to schedule checks, feed changes and preparation of the kindling area.

How long is a ferret's gestation period?

The average is 42 days from breeding to kindling, about 1 month and 1 week. Anything between 38 and 44 days is normal, and a typical litter is 6-8 kits. Treat the calculated date as the middle of that window rather than a fixed appointment.

Working backwards from a target kindling date

If you want kits on the ground in a particular week, switch the calculator to target date mode and enter the date you are aiming for. It subtracts 42 days to give the breeding date to book, plus the earliest and latest service dates that still land inside your window.

Ferret gestation calculator FAQs

How long is a ferret pregnant?

About 42 days — six weeks — with almost all jills kindling between 38 and 44 days. Ferret gestation is one of the most predictable of any small pet.

How do I know it is a real pregnancy and not a false one?

Ultrasound from about day 12 to 14. False pregnancies in ferrets run the full six weeks with nest building and mammary development, so behaviour and shape alone are not proof.

Why is leaving a jill in season without mating dangerous?

Prolonged oestrogen exposure suppresses the bone marrow and causes aplastic anaemia, which can be fatal. Any jill not being bred should be spayed or managed with a hormone implant rather than left in season.

What should a pregnant ferret eat?

A high-protein, high-fat diet — a kit or breeding formulation — available constantly rather than in set meals. Her intake can rise sharply in the last two weeks, and running out of food even briefly raises the risk of pregnancy toxaemia.

What do I need to have ready before kindling?

A dark, enclosed nest box with soft bedding in a quiet, warm room, food and water she cannot empty, and no cage changes from about day 35. Handle her as little as possible and let her arrange the nest herself.

When do ferret kits open their eyes and get weaned?

Eyes open at roughly three to five weeks, much later than most small pets. They start on solid food around three to four weeks and are usually fully weaned by six to eight weeks.
