Signs a ferret is pregnant

• The vulva, swollen during oestrus, reduces in size within about a week of a successful mating
• Ultrasound confirmation from around day 12 to 14
• Nipples become prominent and pink from roughly the third week
• Clear weight gain and a broad, filled-out abdomen by day 28

• Restlessness and a short loss of appetite in the final hours before kindling
• Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before kindling begins.

What affects ferret gestation length

• Ferret gestation is short and remarkably consistent: 41 to 42 days, with almost every jill kindling between 38 and 44.
• Ferrets are induced ovulators and seasonal breeders, coming into season as daylight lengthens in spring, so the mating date is usually known exactly.
• A jill left in season without being mated can develop oestrogen-induced aplastic anaemia, a life-threatening bone marrow disease — this is why unbred jills are spayed or given a hormone implant.
• Pregnancy toxaemia is a serious risk in the last week, especially in first-time jills carrying large litters. Food and water must never run out, even for a few hours.
• Jills can have false pregnancies lasting the full six weeks, with nest building and mammary development but no kits.
• Kits are born tiny, deaf, blind and almost hairless at around 8 to 10 grams, and depend entirely on the jill for the first three weeks.
