Signs a rat is pregnant

• Steady weight gain from about day 10 — the most reliable check with a 22-day pregnancy
• Nipples become visible through the coat around the middle of the second week
• Pear-shaped body from roughly day 16, with visible pup movement in the last few days

• Does come into heat every four to five days year round and can conceive within 24 hours of giving birth, so an un-separated buck means a new litter every three weeks.
• Litters are large — 6 to 12 pups is normal and 15 or more happens — and pups are born blind, deaf and hairless at about 5 grams.
• Rats are the small pet most tolerant of interference: a well-socialised doe usually accepts brief, gentle handling of her pups after the first two or three days.
• Pups can breed from about five weeks, so separating the litter by sex on time is not optional.
• A doe bred repeatedly without rest suffers markedly shortened lifespan and higher tumour rates, which is why responsible breeders limit litters per doe.
