Why is chinchilla gestation so long?

Because the kits are born fully developed — furred, eyes open, teeth through, walking and nibbling solids within hours. All that growth happens before birth, which takes months rather than weeks.

How many kits will she have?

Usually one to three, most often twins. Small litters are normal for the species, and a female should not have more than two litters a year.

What changes do I need to make to the cage?

From about day 90 remove the wheel, the high shelves and any steep ramps, because a fall late in pregnancy can cost the litter. Add a low nest box with soft hay, keep everything within easy reach, and keep the room cool — below roughly 22°C.

Does the male need to be removed?

Yes, before the birth. A female can conceive again within hours of giving birth, and back-to-back 111-day pregnancies with nursing in between are seriously damaging to her.

When is a chinchilla birth an emergency?

If she strains for more than 20 to 30 minutes without producing a kit, if she is bleeding heavily, or if a kit is visible but not progressing. Kits are large relative to the mother, so difficult births do happen and need a vet immediately.
