Signs a chinchilla is pregnant

• Steady weekly weight gain from about the fifth or sixth week — the earliest reliable sign
• Ultrasound or gentle palpation confirms the pregnancy from around day 60
• Nipples become prominent and the abdomen broadens from roughly day 75
• She becomes less agile, jumps less and settles on lower levels of the cage

• Nest interest and time spent in a nest box in the final two weeks
• Restlessness and stretching on the morning of the birth, which is usually quick
• Contact your vet if labour stalls, if the animal strains without progress, or if there is abnormal discharge before birthing begins.

What affects chinchilla gestation length

• At about 111 days, chinchillas have by far the longest pregnancy of any common small pet — more than five times a hamster's and about six weeks longer than a guinea pig's.
• Kits are born fully furred with eyes open and teeth through, and can move around and nibble solids within hours, which is why the pregnancy is so long.
• Litters are small, usually one to three kits, and a female typically has two litters a year at most.
• A female can conceive again within hours of giving birth, so the male must be removed before the birth if you do not want back-to-back litters.
• Chinchillas overheat easily and a pregnant female is more vulnerable still: above about 25°C she is at real risk, so temperature control matters as much as diet.
• Because kits are large relative to the mother, dystocia is a genuine risk and a female who strains without producing a kit needs a vet the same hour.
